The Great Plan of Happiness:
Before our mortal existence, we lived with Heavenly Father. His plan for us includes coming to earth, experiencing mortality, and returning to His presence. The Atonement of Jesus Christ enables us to repent, be forgiven, and receive gospel ordinances. These ordinances are essential for exaltation, and our goal should be to receive them for ourselves and our families. President Boyd K. Packer emphasized that these ordinances and covenants become our credentials for admission into God’s presence.

Eternal Families Are Part of the Plan:
Families are central to Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness. We are part of both a heavenly family and an earthly one. While we have received gospel ordinances, many of our ancestors have not. Our deceased ancestors reside in the spirit world, where they have the opportunity to hear and accept the gospel. However, they rely on us to provide the ordinances they cannot receive for themselves. President Gordon B. Hinckley taught that God designed the family for our greatest happiness and joy.

Uniting Families for Eternity:
Temple and family history work is the means for uniting and sealing families for eternity. As we make covenants during our own temple ordinances, we participate in this sacred work. Our efforts extend beyond ourselves to bless our ancestors. By performing ordinances vicariously for our kindred dead, we help them progress and come forth in the first resurrection.

Healing and Blessings:
Family history and temple work bless not only the deceased but also the living. It has the power to heal relationships and hearts. When we engage in this work, we participate in God’s plan to bring families together eternally. It turns our hearts to one another and provides healing where needed.

Pure Love of Christ for Ancestors:
As we pray with all the energy of our hearts, we can be filled with the pure love of Christ for our ancestors. This love motivates us to seek out their names, learn their stories, and perform ordinances on their behalf. Our efforts in family history work are driven by love and compassion.
